What is ringworm? Ringworm is a fungal infection that initially appears as redness on the skin and expands in a circular motion, hence the name "ringworm." Because ringworm is an infection, it is contagious and can be spread through simple contact with someone who is infected. The key to treating ringworm is containing it to prevent further contamination. Consistent treatment at home can ensure that ringworm is eliminated from your home environment.
Step 1
Launder clothing, towels and bedding regularly in hot water whenever possible. Dry clothing under a high heat setting in the dryer. This will prevent items that have come into contact with the affected area from spreading the ringworm bacteria.
Step 2
Use a Lysol or antibacterial spray in each room of the home to kill any airborne bacteria or viruses that may exacerbate the ringworm symptoms.
Step 3
Use an antiseptic soap to wash the affected area(s). Use warm water and dry the area with a clean, dry towel. Aim to keep the affected area clean and dry. Moisture can breed bacteria.
Step 4
Avoid scratching the affected area. Scratching the area will further irritate the skin and spread the ringworm infection to the hands and other surfaces that are touched. Use a cool compress to suppress the itching sensations.
Step 5
Use a antifungal lotion, cream or drying powder containing ketoconazole. Apply the solution to the affected area each time after you wash it, which should be multiple times per day.
Step 6
Use antibacterial gel or lotion throughout the day.
