Everybody has pores. They are simply the opening in the skin through which the hair grows. Usually, pores would be barely visible. Unfortunately, things like dead skin cell build up can cause pores to look much larger than they actually are. Knowing how to treat enlarged pores can help reduce their appearance and leave your face feeling healthier and looking smoother.
Step 1
Wash regularly with a good exfoliant. Since enlarged pores are commonly caused by dead skin building up around the pores, an exfoliant can help shrink pores by removing that dead skin. Take care not to over-exfoliate, which can disrupt the oil glands and cause an acne break out on the face.
Step 2
Moisturize with a skin cream or lotion that lists alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) as an ingredient. These are taken from fruit and milk and are very useful in removing the dead skin cells that gather around the pores. They will also leave the skin feeling and looking smoother. These AHAs can be found in many lotions and are often easily found in major drugstores. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer for best results.
Step 3
Use makeup that will work better for reducing pores. Many foundations should be avoided as they are too heavy and will cause the pores to appear larger rather than smaller. If you feel the need to use a foundation, pick one that is water-based (as opposed to oil-based) and apply it to the face only after the moisturizer on your face has dried. A better option is to apply a powder on the face, which can minimize the appearance of pores and give a cleaner look than foundation.
Step 4
Go to your local spa and get a facial that focuses specifically on reducing pore size. Be sure that the facial technician is one that is certified and is experienced in giving facials.
Step 5
Talk with your dermatologist about other options that may be available to you if large pores continue to be a problem.
