Dry, itchy scalp can be associated with dandruff, psoriasis or an allergic reaction. Whatever the cause of your scalp irritation, there are treatment options that are cheap and effective. In most cases involving itchy scalp, it is not necessary to consult a doctor, and at home treatment can prove the most effective solution.
Step 1
Wash hair is lukewarm or cold water. Hot water dries out the scalp and can cause flaking. Lukewarm or cold water will reintroduce moisture into the scalp and alleviate itchiness.
Step 2
Wash your hair less frequently. Stripping your hair and scalp of its natural oils with repeated washings can cause irritation and dry skin on the scalp. Allowing oils to to their job will reduce itchiness and irritation.
Step 3
Limit your use of hair styling products. Products can build up in your hair and on your scalp causing itching and debris from the dried product. Wash styling products out of your hair completely by massaging the scalp with the tips of your fingers in a circular motion.
Step 4
Wash with a good tar-based shampoo. Tar will add moisture back into the scalp and remove dandruff flakes as well as soothe the skin.
Step 5
Apply natural oils such as chamomile, eucalyptus or lavender to your scalp daily. This will keep your hair protected from environmental toxins and keep it moisturized, reducing itching and swelling.
Step 6
Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Keeping yourself hydrated will also hydrate your skin, healing dry areas and removing itchy dry skin.
Tips and Warnings
- Use a seperate shampoo and conditioner when washing as combination shampoos and conditioners weigh hair down, causing damage to the scalp.
