Patients may be concerned about scars after surgery. Scarring takes place as part of the natural healing process, as the body produces collagen to replenish skin at the site of an incision. Scarring can be reduced by some simple techniques while healing.
Step 1
Ensure that the wound is covered with a bandage immediately after surgery. The bandage should loosely cover the wound, but not be restrictive or pulling the skin around the wound.
Step 2
Regularly apply an antibacterial ointment or cream--Neosporin is a good choice--to the surgical incision site, unless otherwise directed by a physician. Clean the site at least once per day using an antibacterial soap and warm water to help kill germs and prevent infection.
Step 3
Gently massage the surgical site several times a day to keep the healing tissue soft. You should do this when the surgical site is not overly tender to avoid ripping stitches. Using your fingers, rub the surgical site in a circular motion. Massaging the site helps to break down collagen bonds that could otherwise result in a more pronounced scar.
Step 4
Silicone sheets have shown promise in helping to reduce scar formation after surgery. These sheets can be purchased over the counter and can be placed directly over the surgical site. They have proven especially helpful in preventing or healing the formation of hypertrophic, or raised, scars.
Step 5
Practice good nutritional habits after surgery, selecting from each of the food groups to get a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. Good nutrition is vital to the healing process, and failing to consume a healthy diet can slow the healing process and cause greater scarring.
