Tanning lotions have been touted by many as a much safer way to tan your skin without being exposed to harmful UV rays. When you are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or from tanning bed lamps, your skin overproduces melanin. This overproduction causes your skin to tan. This form of tanning puts you at risk for skin cancer as well as signs of premature aging.
History
Sunless tanning lotions were developed in the 1980s in a response to concerns about the harmful effects of sun exposure. Since being tan was still a popular look, individuals were given the option to apply a lotion to their skin to achieve this look. Premature aging and skin cancer risk are not associated with the use of tanning lotions.
Function
Tanning lotions contain a chemical known as DHA. This chemical reacts with the epidermis in order to produce a tan upon the skin. The color change that occurs typically lasts for a week. To keep the tan longer, applying the tanning lotion daily may be considered.
Types
Numerous companies produce tanning lotions. Some brand examples include Neutrogena Build a Tan, Coppertone Sunless Tanning Lotion, and Fake Bake Sunless Self Tanning. Sunless tanning lotions can usually be found in the same aisle as sunscreen and sun protection products.
Application
To apply the tanning lotion, you should first shower and then exfoliate your skin. You should be naked and have your hair tied back during the application process. Slather on the lotion in an even coat and completely cover the body. You may want to enlist the help of someone to get to hard-to-reach areas like the back. If you don't have a helper available, you can use a sponge paintbrush to apply the lotion to the back. Wait at least 15 minutes before you put on clothes.
Warning
There are some warnings you should consider before you use sunless tanning lotion. The color produced from using the lotion may not be even if it is applied to skin that has already suffered sun damage. It is also important to remember to wash hands thoroughly after use to avoid tan palms and nails.
