The Signs of a Healthy Relationship

We are all in relationships every day of our lives, with our family, bosses and coworkers, close friends, spouses and partners. All of these relationships require certain levels of trust, commitment and understanding, respect and support based on the type and the degree of closeness of the relationship. A healthy relationship with a spouse or partner is special, offering much excitement, togetherness and rewards.

What are the Signs?

A healthy relationship is expressed in almost every aspect of a couple's interactions with each other. Some of these are open communication, conflict resolution, forgiveness, caring and affection. Open communication in particular is vital to keeping a relationship strong and healthy.

Open Communication

Communication is a combination of verbal and nonverbal languages. Much of communication happens through body language, tone of voice, smiles, frowns, winks and touches. These gestures among couples sometimes say more than words. Speaking with each other with respect and sensitivity and expressing feelings, sharing information and support for each other will create a strong emotional bond. Open communication also includes honesty, giving each other validation, listening and being able to express feelings even if your opinion differs from that of your spouse.

Conflict Resolution and Forgiveness

Conflict is a normal occurrence among couples. The ability to face an issue and work together in resolving it can help to reveal much about each other and increase your emotional bond. The ability to forgive each other is another sign of strength and commitment to each other. Forgiveness is not always easy. It requires letting go of anger and resentment, forgiving and forgetting, and recommitting to each other.

Caring and Affection

Expressing caring and affection means showing your softer sides to each other. It's giving attention, support and understanding to each other. It is the act of breaking down all the walls within and around each other and sharing each other's experience and spiritual essence. It's an expression of love. Signs of a healthy relationship also include self-love, self-respect and good self-esteem.
