Hydroxyzine or Atarax is categorized as an antihistamine that has many uses. It blocks the natural release of histamines by the immune system that produces common allergy symptoms. This drug is useful as a sedative or as an anti-anxiety medication, and is known to reduce nausea and vomiting from motion sickness. Additionally, it is given to patients before or after surgery to assist in reducing pain and anxiety. The side effects of this drug generally are considered minor.
Sedative Effect
Hydroxyzine hydrochloride 25 mg is a standard dose that is taken 3 or 4 times/day. A primary common side effect of this medication is drowsiness. Therefore it is important that the recommended dose is maintained; also, alcohol, narcotics, etc., should not be used in concert with this medication. According to Rxlist, this common side effect is not long-lasting and likely will dissipate after several days; drowsiness also may lessen if the dosage is reduced. Additionally, dizziness may be experienced. Since this drug can be used as a sedative, proper care should be taken so as not to attempt complex tasks such as driving or operating equipment. Tremors
A less common side effect that may be produced by this medication includes involuntary movements or tremors. According to Rxlist, this side effect usually is associated with taking dosages higher than what should be ingested; thus, decreasing the amount back to the recommended dose should alleviate this effect. However, one should seek medical attention if this symptom persists.
Headaches
Headaches are a frequently reported effect of this medication. Extreme tiredness, problems with vision, and irritating (red) areas of the skin may be noticed. According to the National Library of Medicine, dryness of the mouth and throat with increased secretions may occur after beginning this drug. Keeping hydrated by drinking plenty of water and sucking on candy or chewing gum may help to reduce these effects.
Precautions
