How to Stop Thinning Hair in Men

Thinning hair in men occurs when the diameter of the hair follicle begins to shrink. This takes place when dihydrotestosterone (DHT) attaches itself to the hair follicle. If left unchecked, the follicle will eventually die and be unable to produce hair, so prompt action is recommended at the first sign of hair loss.

Step 1

See your doctor. A visit to the doctor for hair loss may seem a bit extreme, but hair loss can be a sign of additional health problems and should be looked into. You will also need your doctor to write a prescription for Propecia.

Step 2

Wash your hair in the morning with Nioxin. Nioxin will not grow hair, but will leave your hair looking fuller and thicker. The ingredients in the shampoo are designed to promote increased circulation, which may allow minoxidil to penetrate the scalp more easily.

Step 3

Wash hair with Nizoral every third day. Nizoral will act as an anti-inflammatory, which will help the scalp.

Step 4

Dry hair. The scalp should be dried before applying minoxidil regardless of which of the two shampoos you are using that day.

Step 5

Apply 1ml of minoxidil to scalp. The dropper that comes packaged with the minoxidil will be sufficient for most people. It is important to get minoxidil directly on the scalp, especially in areas where thinning has started. Minoxidil is one of just two treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat hair loss.

Step 6

Take Propecia as prescribed by a physician. Propecia was the second drug approved by the FDA and will help lower DHT levels.

Step 7

Apply minoxidil to the scalp in the evening. This will be done in the same manner as the morning application, and should be done several hours before retiring for the night in order for your scalp to dry completely.
