Essential oils are present in most plants and flowers that give off a scent, and in some cases, have healing properties. Commonly used in soaps, shampoos, massage oils and therapies, such oils come in a variety of colors from orange to amber to clear. Herbs and flowers are especially rich in essential oils, but oils can come from any part of a plant--bark, stems, flower petals and even the roots. Essential oils are commonly used to provide soothing relief, and when combined with what is known as a carrier (such as almond oil) are often rubbed onto the skin for therapeutic absorption.
Skin Therapy
Essential oils are often used to deal with a variety of skin issues, like dry skin, and also to create lotions and masks as well as soothing facial steam baths. Oils can be added to unscented lotions or rubbed on the skin directly to hydrate, release toxins and promote relaxation.
Compresses
Compresses containing essential oils are often used to soothe bruises, cuts and scrapes; to help with cramps; and to reduce swelling and inflammation. A cloth can be dipped into an infusion of hot water mixed with essential oils such as chamomile or lavender or neem oil, then applied to a tender area and covered with a warm cloth or piece of plastic. This can offer soothing and immediate relief of muscle pain.
Cleansers
Some essential oils are used in household cleaning tasks. A teaspoon of lemon oil can be added to a load of laundry to remove grease smells; a couple of drops of lavender essential oil added to a dryer sheet give clothing a pleasant scent. Adding tea tree, lemon or even grapefruit oils to water for cleaning windows or other surfaces infuses the home with a nice aroma and also helps cut down on streaking.
With Bath Salts
Essential oils can be added to Epsom salts for bathing, or to baking soda and sea salts, for a relaxing, muscle-soothing bath. Several drops of a favorite essential oil can leave the skin feeling softer and looking healthier. To relief stress and anxiety, try patchouli, sandalwood, lavender or sage.
Insect Repellent
Essential oils like catnip combined with vegetable oil provide a barrier against flies and mosquitoes.
