L-tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid used to stimulate the production of brain neurotransmitters, especially dopamine. It is also taken as a dietary supplement by bodybuilders, used by some people to increase weight loss and taken by others to promote skin health. Tyrosine also combines with iron to form some of the thyroid hormones that control the body's metabolism, according to Environmental Illness Resource. As with all natural products, in many cases the majority of effects are beneficial; but some mild side effects have been noted, and although uncommon, they should be taken into account with use of this supplement.

General Side Effects

According to emedtv.com, L-tyrosine has minor side effects including joint pain, heartburn, nausea, headaches and fatigue. Nutritional Supplements Health Guide mentions, in addition, mood changes and irritability.

Serious Side Effects

In rare instances, an increase in the symptoms of Graves disease, also known as hyperthyroidism, have been reported, according to emedtv.com. Symptoms of allergic reactions have also been experienced, such as wheezing, swelling in the mouth or throat, problems breathing, rash and hives. Chest pain and changes in heart rate are other possible serious side effects, according to Nutritional Supplements Health Guide.

Overdose

Since L-tyrosine affects the nervous system, there is potential for significant effects from overdosing, according to Nutritional Supplements Health Guide.

Contraindications

People with Parkinson's disease taking prescription medication, those taking antidepressants, diabetics and pregnant women are advised to avoid L-tyrosine, Nutritional Supplements Health Guide warns.
