Massage has been used for centuries to heal and soothe the body. Although definitive research on the benefits of massage is scarce, it is commonly recommended as a therapy for many chronic conditions, including back pain, arthritis, depression and infertility. Massage oils help enhance a massage.
Function
The primary purpose of massage oil is to reduce friction between the hands of the masseuse and the person being massaged. Massage oil allows smooth, fluid motions on the body. The oil provides the masseuse with the ability to stroke and knead the muscular structure of the body.
Features
Massage oils are made from plant sources---leaves, flowers, bark, seeds, nuts and fruits. The oils often feature the natural scents of the source, such as citrus and peppermint. Because essential oils are quite concentrated, they are usually blended with a gentle, neutral carrier oil such as grapeseed or almond.
Benefits
Certain aromas are simply pleasing or are believed to have properties that address certain physical or mental conditions. When inhaled, the aroma invokes a chemical or emotional response in the brain. Clary sage, for example, can be used as an antidepressant, and peppermint relieves fatigue. Certain oils create certain sensations on the skin in addition to lubrication---rosemary helps soothe strained muscles and stimulates circulation. Additives may be included in oils, such as aloe vera or vitamin E to help soothe dry skin.
Considerations
Essential oils, especially those made from nuts and seeds, can go rancid, so it is best to store them in a cool dry place and replace them regularly. Some people have sensitivities to certain essential oils and can develop rashes with their use. Although some oils leave you feeling greasy, you can rinse them off easily with soap and water.
Alternatives
If you find the oil completely turns you off massage, try to find a specialist who specializes in oil-free massage. A masseuse will have to utilize different techniques such as tapping, compression and rocking if oil is not used. Thai massage is one form that utilizes stretching and gentle pressure instead of kneading and rubbing motions---so oil is not necessary.
