1. What You Need to Know From Head to Toe
From head to toe, you should layer your clothing when you dress for winter walking. As a general rule, your bottom layer should keep your skin dry and body warm, so wear leggings, a tight-fitted top, or even long John's. Wear fleece or wool on top which will keep heat in and cold and dampness out. Finally, cover-up with a wind and water resistant layer to protect you from the elements.
2. Head
The majority of body heat escapes through your head, so prepare for winter walking and always wear a warm hat, preferably one which is wool or fleece. Ears are important too, so try a hat with ear covers, or wear an ear band under your hat. A warm scarf will keep your neck warm and can also be wrapped around your nose and chin. Finally, don't forget sunblock for your face and lips as well as sunglasses, as the sun tends to bounce of the snow to chap your lips and burn your skin.
3. Shoulders
While cotton breathes, choose polyester fabrics walking in cold weather, as they keep you warm and dry. Shirts should be long-sleeved and can be covered with a wool or fleece vest or sweater if the temperature is below 40 degrees F. A jacket which is wind and waterproof is an essential piece of clothing for cold weather walking. Many winter jackets come with a removable inner shell made from down or another insulating material, making them convenient for both chilly and extremely cold conditions.
4. Knees
Pants should be made from polyester as well; however, you might prefer to wear stockings and/or long johns covered with a pair of rain pants to help protect you from the wind, snow and rain. Additionally, there are many types of wool and fleece pants designed for winter sports which include zipped pockets, elastic waistbands and cuffs which can be tightened around the ankles, making them perfect for layering and staying dry.
5. Don't Forget the Fingers
Last but not least, don't forget your gloves. In chilly weather, you will probably get by with a cheap pair of knit gloves, but in extremely cold conditions fleece mittens will make all the difference.
