Types of Credit Repair

Everyone needs credit to move forward in life. Whether you are buying a car or a home, you need a solid credit history to get approved for these lines of new credit. If you have a poor credit history, this can negatively impact your ability to make big life changes and even get jobs. Thankfully, there are ways to repair your credit so that you can get on with your life.

Dispute Inaccurate Information

Repairing your credit can sometimes be as simple as reviewing your credit report for mistakes and disputing any inaccurate or outdated information that you find. If an account is shown as late or that you have a missed a payment when you know you haven't, be sure to report it to the credit bureau and the creditor that made the false claim. Your credit will increase once the error is removed.

Credit Repair Companies

Credit repair companies can also help you fix your credit. These companies specialize in helping people find all of the small errors and issues that you might not notice yourself. They can also help to remove offending credit from your credit report. However, it is vital that you read their terms and conditions thoroughly and be wary of any company that promises to fix your credit (because this can't be guaranteed), require upfront payment or will move ahead without your signature.

Credit Counseling

Credit counselors can help you develop a plan to fix your credit on your own. They can take your income and bill information and figure out a budget. They may also contact your creditors on your behalf to develop repayment plans for credit cards or loans that have too high of balances or interest rates for you to pay currently, but you could pay if you were given an extended period of time to do so. As with credit repair companies, check to ensure that your credit counselor doesn't require upfront fees and has clear terms and conditions.
