An allergy is a condition in which the body's immune system reacts to a foreign substance. In spring allergies, this substance is most likely pollen released from plants and trees. Pollen is then inhaled, which prompts a response from the immune system that results in unwanted symptoms. These symptoms can cause the person suffering from the allergies to miss work, school or free time with his family. Although allergies cannot be cured, there are many medications that can help relieve some of the common symptoms.
Nasal Congestion
When a person inhales spring pollen, immune cells in the nasal passages react by releasing chemical signals that cause inflammation, or swelling. This swelling occurs by making the blood vessels in the nasal passages enlarge. According to the Mayo Clinic, these enlarged vessels are the main cause of congestion, or stuffy nose, and can make it very difficult to breathe. Furthermore, nasal congestion can cause a person to have a sinus headache, or headache in the forehead or around the eyes. While over-the-counter nasal decongestants can be used, a person with nasal congestion should alert his doctor if these symptoms become severe. Over-the-counter medications should be used as directed.
Itchy and Runny Nose
According to the Mayo Clinic, an itchy and runny nose is a common symptom of spring allergies. This occurs because chemical signals released by the immune system can cause an itching sensation in the nose. In addition, a runny nose is caused by these same chemical signals. A runny nose occurs because swelling of nasal tissues and blood vessels causes excess fluid or mucous to leak out of the nose. Common over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants may help relieve these symptoms. However, a person with these symptoms should alert his doctor if these symptoms become severe.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is a symptom that involves red, tearing, and itchy eyes that accompany spring allergies, according to the Mayo Clinic. It will be tempting to rub the eyes to relieve itching, but this will only make the symptoms worse. It is also recommended to avoid wearing contacts with conjunctivitis. Many common eye drops are available over-the-counter.
