How to Get a Safe Tan While Using a Tanning Bed

Tanning beds provide a way to get a fast tan for any event such as a wedding or weekend getaway, or just to keep year-round color. As with any tanning activity that utilizes UVA rays, there are safety precautions that should be followed. Following safety guidelines will prevent burning and reduce your risk for skin cancer.

Step 1

Apply a tanning lotion that is made specifically for tanning bed use. There are several types, from general accelerators to those with tingle factor that brings the body's natural melanin to the surface of the skin. Melanin is the chemical responsible for skin coloration. Apply the lotion on the arms, legs, chest and stomach an hour before entering the tanning bed. Do not apply tingle factor lotions to the face.

Step 2

Place tanning bed goggles on your eyes. Goggles will prevent damage to your eyes and keep the skin from wrinkling around your eyes with repeated tanning bed sessions.

Step 3

Cover all sensitive areas such as breasts and genitals with a cloth or towel. These areas are more prone to burns and discoloration. You can wear a bathing suit if you feel more comfortable; however, a towel or cloth will eliminate tan lines.

Step 4

Start tanning in five-minute daily increments, and work your way up to no longer than 20 minutes per session. This will "toughen" your skin, helping reduce risk of burning and aid in successful tanning.

Step 5

Place a bottle of water near you. Keeping hydrated while tanning in a tanning bed will help prevent your skin from drying and cracking. Also, a good moisturizer should be applied after your session. Vitamin E moisturizers are ideal as they cool the skin afterward.
