Effexor XR Side Effects

Effexor XR (venlafaxine hydrochloride) is an antidepressant medication available as a capsule and by prescription only. This medication may also be prescribed to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD) and panic disorder (PD). Effexor XR is the extended release version of the medication Effexor and should not be confused. The extended release mechanism of Effexor XR allows patients to take this medication as a single dose, once daily. Additionally, the EffexorXR website reports caution if you are currently taking medications that work as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs can cause grave reactions and even death if taken in conjunction with Effexor XR. Always discuss your medical history with a medical care provider before taking this medication.

Common Side Effects

The Drugs website reports the most common side effects experienced with this medication are dizziness, drowsiness, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, headache, flushing, dry mouth, decreased libido, taste changes, yawning and blurred vision. Severe Side Effects

Severe side effects can occur while taking Effexor XR. Do not hesitate to seek emergency medical care if you believe you are experiencing a severe side effect. The Drugs website indicates such side effects as severe allergic reactions, cognitive problems, lack of coordination, fainting, tachycardia, chills, fever, sore throat, blood in the stool, chest pain, decreased urinary output, panic attacks, restlessness, skin irritation, shortness of breath, weight loss, headache, suicidal thoughts or attempts, tremor, bruising or bleeding more easily, mood changes and vision problems.

Additional Considerations

Many patients do not experience side effects with this medication; however, the EffexorXR website indicates that over time recurring side effects may decrease as your body adjusts to this medication. It takes approximately four to eight weeks to notice positive mood and behavior changes. Consult with your medical care provider about additional questions and concerns regarding Effexor XR.
