As the skin ages, it can become dry, itchy and cracked. Standard soaps and moisturizers can be too harsh or too light for aging skin. To take care of aging skin properly, it is important to alter your normal skin care routine to make accommodations for the skin. Proper anti-aging skin care is important for all types of skin, particularly sensitive skin.

Gentle Cleansing

Aging skin releases less oil than youthful skin, which can cause the skin to become drier and more sensitive. Standard soaps can be too harsh on aging skin, as they typically contain additives that can irritate the skin, such as perfumes and dyes. People with aging skin types should use a soap formulated for sensitive skin types, which are free of chemical additives.

Natural Wrinkle Treatments

Commercial wrinkle creams, toners and lotions can contain ingredients that can be irritating to the skin. Although many different treatments can reduce wrinkles over time, people with both aging and sensitive skin may sometimes have strong reactions when they apply these products. Instead of using over-the-counter (OTC) wrinkle fighters, select a natural wrinkle treatments that contain only natural ingredients, such as Vitamin C, alpha hydroxy acids or Vitamin E.

Heavier Moisturizing Lotion

Aging skin is drier and requires a heavier moisturizing lotion that will not clog the pores. Look for a moisturizer that is oil-free yet formulated for aging skin. Apply the moisturizer whenever spending a great deal of time outdoors or in extreme conditions and whenever the skin feels tight or itchy.

Weekly Oil Facials

Oil facials are helpful in keeping the skin deeply hydrated, making it ideal for aging and sensitive skin types. To apply an oil facial, select an oil that will not clog the pores, such as jojoba or castor oil. Massage a few teaspoons onto the skin for a few minutes, then press a steaming washcloth onto the skin. After the washcloth becomes cool again, use it to wipe off the oil.

Monthly Masks

Once per month, apply a deeply hydrating and healing mask. When the skin is properly hydrated and inflammation is reduced, the skin will become more supple and soft. Oatmeal makes an effective anti-aging mask that contain high levels of Vitamin E. Mix together 1/2 cup of oats into 1 cup of hot water. When the oatmeal cools, smooth it onto the skin and leave it there for 15 minutes. Rinse the oatmeal with warm water.
