If you struggle with frequent bladder problems, such as urinary tract infections or interstitial cystitis, you may be able to limit bladder irritation and pain by modifying your diet. Avoiding foods that are high in acid, caffeine or artificial sweeteners may help you maintain a healthy bladder. The Interstitial Cystitis Network recommends that individuals with bladder problems limit or eliminate certain foods from their diets.
Coffee
Regular and decaf coffee can irritate the bladder due to the high levels of caffeine and acid in coffee beans. Herbal or low acid coffees are better options to help keep your bladder healthy.
Regular and Green Teas
Whether hot or iced, regular teas, such as Earl Grey, can be irritating to the bladder due to the presence of tannic acid within these drinks. Green tea---despite all of the health benefits it imparts---is also acidic and can cause bladder irritation. Instant powdered teas, both regular and sugar-free, contain high levels of preservatives that can also irritate the bladder. Herbal chamomile or peppermint teas are better options to ensure your bladder remains healthy.
Soda
Regular and diet sodas contain citric acid (for flavoring) and high levels of preservatives. Diet sodas---due to their high levels of artificial sweeteners---can even be damaging to the bladder. Organic sodas, though still problematic for the bladder, may offer a better alternative to traditional soda if you are trying to keep your bladder healthy.
Fruit Juice
Though fruits and vegetables are traditionally part of a healthy diet, fruit juice has very high levels of fruit acid. Fruit acid, which is highest in lemon, tomato, orange or cranberry juices, can irritate and inflame the bladder. Milder fruit juices, such as apple or pear juice, are better options for keeping your bladder healthy.
Chocolate
Chocolate---especially milk chocolate---can cause bladder pain and irritation in some people. Chocolate has high levels of histamine, a substance that can cause an allergic reaction in certain individuals. Dark or white chocolate are better options to help keep your bladder healthy.
Artificial Sugar
When artificial sugar or sweeteners are digested by the body, a very strong acid is produced that can irritate and inflame the bladder. When possible, it is best to avoid these types of sweeteners all together if you are concerned about the health of your bladder.
