Orthopedic diseases of the hand can result in pain, inflammation or deformities that can significantly interfere with your ability to perform normal activities, such as opening a door or driving. Though some symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter pain or anti-inflammatory medications, orthopedic surgery may be necessary for some patients.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which the median nerve becomes pinched, causing pain and numbness within the hand(s). The causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include heredity, repetitive hand motions (e.g. typing), hormonal changes or underlying medical conditions (e.g. diabetes).
Dupuytren's Contracture
Dupuytren's contracture is a deformity of the hand resulting from the contraction and toughening of connective tissue within your hands. Though the condition is not painful, the contraction of the connective tissue can cause lumps of tissue to form beneath the skin of your palm. Additionally, your fingers may begin to pull in toward your palm, which can significantly interfere with your ability to use your hands normally. At this time, the cause of this condition is unknown.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis---the most common form of arthritis---causes the joints in your fingers and hands to wear down over time. This condition can cause a myriad of symptoms, including pain, stiffness and loss of flexibility within your hands. Though the exact cause of this disease is unknown, joint injury, muscle weakness and the aging process may all contribute to the development of this condition. Osteoarthritis can also affect other joints within the body, such as the hips or knees.
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a disease that results in swelling, burning pain, stiffness and discoloration of the hand. This condition is due to an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for controlling blood flow within the hands and arms. RSD may cause you to lose complete use of your hand(s) if left untreated.
Trigger Finger
Trigger finger is a condition that results in your thumb or fingers snagging in a bent position. If you try to straighten your thumb or finger, it may snap straight---thus the name "trigger finger." Trigger finger is believed to be caused by a narrowing of the protective tissue that surrounds the tendon within the problematic finger or thumb. This condition can be painful and you may experience finger stiffness or hear a popping or clicking noise when you move your fingers.
