Often, family members lose track of one another through moves, marriages, disputes or divorce. Searching for a family member may be initiated out of curiosity, for medical reasons, because an individual is researching the family history, or to find a loved one who seems to have vanished. A variety of options for searching for a relative are available, ranging from free to extremely expensive.
Step 1
Ask family and friends about the missing relative first. This is often the easiest and cheapest way to find someone. Be prepared to deal with some hesitance at times, especially where family secrets are rumored. Whenever possible, be sensitive to the feelings and emotions of others when looking for a lost relative. Try to determine the reason that your relative may have distanced himself from the family in a discreet manner before asking one and all about it.
Step 2
Log onto genealogical websites, if your search is for a missing relative who may have passed away. Many websites such as Ancestry.com or RootsWeb.com keep records of social security numbers; census records; and birth, marriage and death certificates from individuals around the world.
Step 3
Search the Internet for forum and discussion boards looking for lost relatives. Such places allow users to pose queries and information about lost relatives. For individuals looking for a relative in a foreign country that is experiencing military or political upheaval or has experienced a natural disaster, try contacting the International Red Cross at icrc.org for links to a variety of available resources.
Step 4
Check phone books in the last town or city where you know the relative lived. Local libraries often carry phone books for major cities in their state, or you may be able to access phone book databases through your local library or via online resource links.
Step 5
Check with public records of the state where the relative last lived. In many situations, you may access birth, death and marriage information from state registrars with adequate documentation stating your relationship to the individual.
Contact a private detective is monetary resources are available. If the person is suspected missing under suspicious circumstances or if you believe the person has met foul play, contact your local police authorities.
