Broken capillaries (telangiectasia) are dilated facial blood vessels than can be caused by sun damage, wind, spicy foods and hot beverages, according to the New York Cosmetic Skin and Laser Surgery Center (NYCSLSC). Some people may be genetically predisposed to broken capillaries. The America Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says laser surgery is an effective medical procedure to eradicate broke capillaries.
Laser Surgery
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says laser surgery uses a light beam that can be precisely focused to remove bleeding blood vessels or diseased tissues. It treats tissues by heating the targeted cells until they "burst". In addition to treating broken capillaries, laser surgery can also diminish the appearance of other facial imperfections, including blemishes, sun spots, wrinkles and scars. The YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) laser and the pulsed dye laser are both designed to eliminate telangiectasia.
Pulse Dye Laser
The NYCSLSC says the most highly developed pulse dye laser is called the V-Beam laser. It is designed so that the laser's energy is selectively absorbed by the broken capillaries until they are removed. A pulse dye laser can be used on any area of the face (cheeks, nose and chin), but several treatments are generally needed for optimum results.
Intense Pulsed Laser
According to the Pacific Dermatology and Cosmetic Center, its intense pulsed light system utilizes a large field of wavelengths that is perfect for the treatment of a variety of condition including the removal of spots and blood vessels. The light is soaked up by the blood in detectable vessels and converted to heat. The heat shrivels the broken capillaries.
Long-Pulsed YAG Laser
The extended wavelength effects of the long-pulsed YAG 1064 nm laser permits deeper skin penetration. According to SmartSkinCare.com, this laser is especially beneficial in the treatment of larger and deeper telangiectatic vessels.
