How to Grow Strong Nails

Strong nails are a must-have in today's society. Many daily tasks--whether it is opening a door or a soda can--can break weak nails. Weak nails may have many drawbacks other than easy breakage. Pain and sensitivity to touch can occur. Strengthening your nails will not only eliminate these problems but could boost your self esteem as well.

Step 1

Apply a moisturizer to your nails after washing and removal of nail polish. Moisturizers with Vitamin E will help your nails become stronger and assist in nail growth as well. Vitamin E is well known for its role in hair and nail health.

Step 2

Apply a coat of clear nail polish once a week to keep moisture in and promote nail thickening and strengthening. Make sure you remove the polish after a week using a non-acetone-based remover. Apply a fresh coat to your nails.

Step 3

Apply an over-the-counter (OTC) nail hardener found in many drug stores and retail chains. This will nourish your nail and promote healthy density. According the the Mayo Clinic, you should avoid nail hardeners that contain toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde, as these ingredients can cause irritated skin and cuticles.

Step 4

Take 2.5 mg of biotin daily ,in addition to eating a healthy diet rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C and zinc. Intake of biotin and these vitamins will harden the nails and assist in their growth, since most nail weakness can be traced back to a nutritional deficiency.

Things You'll Need

  • Vitamin E moisturizer
  • Clear nail polish
  • Non-acetone nail polish remover
  • 2.5 mg biotin tablets
