Parenting can be difficult. It requires time and patience, and in the hectic pace of today's lifestyles, time can be difficult to set aside for effective parenting. But whether or not the child is present, many parents use parenting skills throughout the day, such as maintaining a home that is safe for a child. Effective parenting skills can help children grow up to be healthy and responsible adults.

History

According to the Center for the Improvement of Child Caring, the importance of helping parents to be effective at raising children was seen early in U.S. history with the first reports of parent group meetings in 1815. Since then, many things have changed. There are more sources of danger to children, including the Internet. But along with the additional dangers, the Internet has brought a rich source of information to parents about building effective parenting skills.

Significance

The significance of effective parenting skills may not be manifested until many years after the birth of a baby. However, these skills help to mold a child's behaviors, according to AllPsych Journal. Effective parenting shapes future generations and how those future generations will behave and affect the world around them. In this sense, effective parenting skills have a great deal of significance for the global future.

Effects

Effective parenting skills will clearly establish parental expectations of the children. Skills that help with establishing expectations include communication skills and the ability to stay calm when children become upset. Being a positive role model for a child and effectively praising him for good behavior also has a positive effect.

Considerations

According to Indiana Child, there are skills that will help parents raise children who have a sense of morality, values and social responsibility. These skills include respecting children and requiring respect from them, teaching by example and explaining actions taken by the parents. Children should be helped to take on responsibilities and to develop positive self-images.

Balance

Effective parents learn how to balance giving children additional independence, which they need to grow into independent adults, and control over the children, which children always seem to be testing. Giving up control too early, however, can reduce the impact that parents can have in guiding their children's actions. It is a balance, and achieving it can be considered an effective parenting skill.
