4 Ways to Pick Low Carb Fruits

1. The Lowest of the Low

Pick low carb fruits without losing your fat burning potential. A glycemic ratio measures how quickly your body reacts with an insulin spike. The insulin spike instigates the process of storing excess energy as fat. The lowest glycemic fruits are rhubarb and cantaloupe. Blackberries, cherries, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are also low in glycemic value. Apples, apricots, tomatoes, plums, peaches, oranges and grapefruits are good choices. Avoid watermelon, pears, mangoes, dried fruits, bananas, prunes, figs, grapes, pineapples and pomegranates. These should be reserved for special occasions.

2. Damage Control

Pick fruits on a low carb diet you like to eat and add some protein and fat to slow the fat storage effect. Eating low carb fruits will be less likely to take you out of fat burning mode if you are conscious not to eat them by themselves. The Zone, by Barry Sears, advocates always eating fat and protein with carbohydrates. A good meal would be half an apple, some turkey and some cheese. Berries with cereal would be too many carbohydrates but some strawberries on a lettuce salad with almonds help balance out the meal. Some people will gain weight with too much fruit on a low carb diet. Cut back on your fruit intake if you find yourself gaining weight.

3. Fruitastic

Picking low carb fruits is fun with some healthy low carb fruit recipes and products. Make your own low carb jelly without adding any sugar in the canning process. If you don't can, find sugar free jelly in your supermarket to use on some low carbohydrate bread for breakfast. Make your own low carb smoothies with some cream or plain yogurt, berries and some protein powder. A good dessert is homemade whipping cream with Splenda and some fruit. One yummy idea is freezing some blueberries or raspberries dipped in dark chocolate. Grab one from the freezer to eat when you want something different.

4. Hold the Ketchup

Fruit variations that are never good for a low carb diet are fruit juices. Condensing all that sugar into a tiny glass will surely pull you out of fat burning mode. Some fruits will also have a higher glycemic value if you cook them. They make ketchup for example, from tomatoes. While a tomato is a good choice for eating with some tuna fish or chicken salad, ketchup is higher in sugar. Avoid meat dishes that have a fruit reduction as part of the sauce. When choosing desserts, stick with cream based versions to slow down fruit compotes or fillings.
