How to Promote Hair Growth

For some, a full head of thick, healthy hair doesn't come easy. However, there are several things a person can do to enhance and promote healthy hair growth. Some are simple and don't require much effort, while others may involve some expense and effort. From eating right to using the right kind of shampoo and sticking to tried and true techniques, a person can enjoy longer, healthier and more voluminous hair growth.

Step 1

Eat right. Hair needs certain ingredients in order to grow, including, protein, iron, vitamins B and E, as well as essential fatty acids. Proteins come from meats, dairy products and soy products, while iron can be ingested through dark green leafy vegetables. Vitamins B and E are found in nuts, seeds, eggs and poultry. Essential fatty oils can be obtained through fish, soy and oils like canola and walnut oil.

Step 2

Brush your hair every day. Brushing stimulates oil production that coats and protects hair and encourages growth. This also helps massage the scalp, unclogging pores and distributing oils to all parts of the head.

Step 3

Use hair products sensibly, says Didi Gluck, author of "Healthy Hair 101" for Marie Claire magazine. Shampoo two to three days a week and deep condition once a week. Over-washing only saturates the hair and scalp with chemical cleansers that can lead to damaged, dried out hair. Avoid holding blow-dryers too close to the scalp, which may damage fine or thin hair. In addition, avoid coloring your hair too often, which can leech hair of its nutrients and leave it looking dull, flat and frizzy, not to mention damaged.
