Nistatin Side Effects

Nystatin is an antifungal medication that treats infections of the vagina, intestinal tract, skin or mouth. According to the National Library of Medicine, it is available as a topical powder, cream, liquid or tablet. You will apply the topical powder or cream to the affected region two times a day or take the liquid or tablet as your doctor instructs.

Common Side Effects

Nystatin's common side effects depend upon the route of delivery. According to MedlinePlus, Nystatin topical cream or powder typically causes itching, burning and irritation at the medicated site. The tablet or liquid suspension can cause diarrhea, stomach problems, a widespread skin rash and stomach pain. Typically, these side effects are not life-threatening but they can be extremely bothersome. Inform your doctor when these symptoms do not disappear within two to four days.

Serious Side Effects

Nystatin is not expected to cause any serious side effects. However, each individual responds differently to a medication. So, you may exhibit a side effect not mentioned in the aforementioned list. Inform your doctor when you develop a symptom not mentioned previously. She may decide to discontinue Nystatin or change its frequency of application or dosage.

Other Concerns

You should avoid Nystatin if you are allergic to any of its components. You can develop such potentially fatal side effects as trouble breathing, hives (skin welts all over your body) and edema (swelling of your face, tongue or throat). All these symptoms make up what is medically known as an anaphylactic reaction.
The National Library of Medicine says that it is unclear whether Nystatin can cause harm to your nursing baby or to your unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Avoid using Nystatin in infants and children less than 16 years old. The National Library of Medicine says that no studies have proven safety in these age groups.
