Although genetics play a role in the eventual appearance of wrinkles on your skin, making lifestyle changes and reducing your exposure to environmental triggers may help delay their appearance. Sun exposure, a diet high in red meat, dairy and butter and smoking and drinking cause you to age quickly. In addition to a good skin care regimen, take care of your overall health to delay the emergence of wrinkles and stop them from getting worse.
Step 1
Use sunscreen every day. Apply a cream, moisturizer, foundation or powder with an SPF of at least 15. Protect your face, hands and neck. Wear a hat with a wide brim if you expect to be in the sun for several hours.
Step 2
Eat a balanced diet free of preservatives and trans fats. Make the focus of every meal colorful, fresh produce which contains antioxidants and vitamin A to fight free radicals that cause the breakdown of cells and instigate wrinkles. Aim for plenty of vitamin C in citrus, which helps strengthen the skin through improved collagen formation. Consume primarily vegetables, legumes and olive oil for, as shown by a study published in a 2001 edition of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," skin wrinkling is greatly diminished in populations with these as the focus of their diet.
Step 3
Stop smoking, or never start, to prevent tiny lines that form around the mouth due to holding the cigarette between your lips. Stay away from smoky places to avoid the skin-dulling effects of second-hand smoke.
Step 4
Moisturize your face and do not wash with soap. Use plain water or special facial cleansers to remove makeup and impurities to avoid over-drying your skin which makes wrinkles more apparent. Pay particular attention to the thin skin of the eye area and apply eye creams with extra hydration to plump the area and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Purchase moisturizers appropriate for your age---older people need heavier, creamier products while younger skin craves light serums and water-based moisture.
