Hair pins are an excellent way to create that updo that is to die for. Hair pins come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are clear, metal colored or plastic coated. Choose pins according to thickness of hair. Thicker hair is better styled with larger hair pins, and thinner hair does well with smaller pins. When creating your updo, you can choose embellished hair pins to accent your outfit or plain pins that match the color of your hair, making them unnoticeable.
Step 1
Apply hair gel to your hair. Damp or dry hair is fine, but avoid starting with completely wet hair. Wet hair makes it harder to create and hold your hairstyle, as the pins will slip easily.
Step 2
Comb your hair into the desired style. If you're making pin curls, section off your hair with the tail of the comb and use a small clip or barrette to hold the sections.
Step 3
Insert hair pins into the sides of your hair style, holding your hair with one hand and maneuvering the pins with the other. Gently open the pin with your fingers and push it upwards to secure the hair. With a gentle twist, push the top of the pin at an angle--sideways or downward--to add extra security. For a better hold, insert a second pin, making an "X" with both pins.
Step 4
Let go of your hair once the pins are in place, and spray the hairstyle with a light mist of hairspray for added hold.
Tips and Warnings
- Do not use hair pins for large sections of hair. Use another method to secure that kind of hairstyle. Plastic-coated pins are less likely to damage hair as metal ones. Check the rubber tips for cracking or slippage. If the rubber tip is not secure, discard the pin. Hair pins are an excellent way to secure faux ponytails and buns.
- Keep hair pins away from small children, as they pose a choking risk.
