Foods to Avoid During Herpes Outbreak

Herpes simplex is a very common viral infection that results in painful, red outbreaks of blisters. The outbreaks commonly occur along the edges of mucous membranes such as the lips and genitals, but can occur anywhere on the skin. Outbreaks are often preceded by sensations of itching, burning or tingling. These symptoms can be a signal to protect yourself and others from spreading the infection and to practice self-care to avoid aggravating the outbreak and to promote healing.

Foods to Avoid in General

Foods high in L-argenine such as chocolate, nuts, seeds, coconut and gelatin can sometimes cause or aggravate herpes outbreaks.

Foods Helpful for Herpes Simplex

Foods containing lysine can be helpful in reducing outbreaks. They include: fish, poultry, cheese, beans and nutritional yeast. Other foods that help with herpes simplex are foods that are generally healthy to the immune system such as fresh fruits and richly colored vegetables.
