Side Effects of Differin

Differin is a topical treatment for acne. The prescription medication is available as a clear gel, solution, swab or a cream. Differing levels of medicine in each product allow for powerful control of pimples while protecting sensitive skin. As with all medicines, some side effects may occur with use. Most of the common side effects are mild and will normally decrease while continuing to use Differin. According to Drugs.com, severe side effects require the use of an added skin moisturizer or discontinuing the medicine.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with using Differin acne medicine include skin reactions. According to RxList.com, 10 to 40 percent of all patients using the medication will experience local adverse reactions. These reactions may include redness, itching, dryness, burning or stinging and peeling skin.

Rare Side Effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, a rare complication of using Differin is an increase in acne. Additional side effects that are less common include swelling of the eyelids, discoloration of the skin, skin rashes, eczema and contact dermatitis. Conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the eye, may also occur.

Increased Occurrence

Using the medication more often than prescribed or in conjunction with other medicines can increase the chance of potential side effects. Using harsh soaps, products containing alcohol or medications containing ingredients such as salicylic acid may increase the unwanted effects of Differin.
