Imitrex 100 mg tablets, used to treat migraine headaches, are available by physician's prescription. The medications works to stop migraine attacks once they start, but will not prevent the headaches from occurring. The medicine also helps decrease the additional symptoms associated with a migraine attack, such as nausea and sensitivity to light. As with all medications, possible side effects may occur when taking oral Imitrex. Some adverse reactions may be severe, especially for individuals with blood vessel disease.
Common Side Effects
Some common side effects after using Imitrex 100 mg tablets mimic symptoms of a migraine attack. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue and sleepiness. Flushing, muscle cramping and stiffness, or a tingling feeling may also occur. Changes in taste sensations are common after taking Imitrex. In addition to upper-digestive upset, bouts of diarrhea are frequently reported as an unwanted reaction.
Less Common Side Effects
Some adverse reactions that are reported less frequently include a generalized feeling of discomfort, loss of vision and anxiety. Ringing in the ears, difficulty hearing and a feeling of fullness in the ears are less common. Rarely, gastrointestinal bleeding, pain and gastric ulcers may occur. Difficulty swallowing, an increase in heart rate and weight loss are reported with less frequency, but are possible reactions to Imitrex.
Serious Side Effects
Because Imitrex affects the blood vessels in the brain, the medication may cause severe adverse reactions in individuals with heart-related problems. The medication can cause an increase or a decrease in blood pressure, angina, heart palpitations and arrhythmias. Another serious possible adverse reaction is pulmonary embolism.
