Fasting Diet

People have fasted for centuries in order to clean toxins from the body and renew their systems. You must abstain from all whole foods for a certain amount of time, and may consume only liquids. Although it seems simple to just not eat, a fast requires mental and physical commitment and should not be embarked upon without appropriate preparation.

Step 1

Determine which diet you will follow to meet your goals. Research your options and decide if you are going with water only, the master cleanse (lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne), or a juice fast.

Step 2

Eat lightly before beginning your fast. Try one meal in the mid-afternoon consisting of raw fruits and vegetables, a lean steamed protein (like white fish) and some brown rice to obtain some fiber and fully nourish your body. Allow this light meal stage to last anywhere from one day to a week.

Step 3

Set aside one to three days to quiet your body and energy. Do no exercise or perform vigorous activity during your fast. Allow yourself to rest and spend plenty of time doing low-key activities like reading or meditating. Fast for only one day if this is your first fast ever.

Step 4

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water or diluted juice.

Step 5

Ease back into whole foods slowly. Return to meals with the same light approach you began your fast---one meal a day consisting of balanced, but plain, foods.

Tips and Warnings

  • A juice fast is usually easier for a first time faster. A juice fast also provides you with some nutrients and energy. Fasting for weight loss is usually counterproductive. Most of the weight you lose is simply fluids and will return as soon as you return to regular eating. A fast might help you signify a fresh start and allow you to better embark on a healthy eating regimen. If your intention is to lose a significant amount of weight, consult your doctor and discuss medical weight loss plans such as medi-fast or opti-fast.
  • Do not conduct a fast if you are pregnant or nursing. Children and the elderly should also not go on fasting diets because of their unique nutritional needs. Never go on a fast longer than 3 days or risk nutritional deficiencies, weakness and light-headedness. You should consult a physician before beginning any diet---particularly one as extreme as a fasting diet.
