The theory of your diet being based on your blood type is relatively new. Doctors, such as Peter J. D'Adamo, have been doing extensive research in this unique matter. This theory is based on evidence that a protein-like compound, called lectins, found in foods reacts with different blood types to cause different reactions to take place. The biochemical uniqueness of each blood type really defines how an individual functions and reacts to certain foods, diseases, medicines and treatments. The blood type is key to unlocking the door to a better life, and it essentially starts with the foods you eat. Each of the four blood types--A, B, O and AB--can be positive or negative.

A-Positive

According to D'Adamo Personalized Nutrition, a diet for blood type A-positive is basically a vegetarian one. This diet consists of eating many organic vegetables, either raw or steamed, and fruits. For protein, it is recommended that people with type A eat a lot of beans, such as soybeans and black beans, as well as lentils. This diet should also limit gluten and whole-fat dairy products. Meat should be eaten sparingly, with chicken as the best choice if desired. Not all vegetables and fruits are good, however, as tomatoes and citrus fruits should be avoided.

B-Positive

According to the Blood Type Diet, people with blood type B-positive should have a diet more focused around protein. Meats, such as goat, lamb, mutton and rabbit, are extremely beneficial. Green, leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, and cucumbers are also great. Eggs and low-fat dairy products are also recommended for type B blood type. Individuals with this blood type should avoid chicken, bacon, ham and shellfish. They should also stay away from wheat, tomatoes and corn.

AB-Positive

Blood type AB is a combination of types A and B and, according to Eat Right For Your Type, is the newest blood type in evolutionary terms. People with the positive form of this blood type are encouraged to eat meat, such as lamb, and turkey and tofu if vegetarian. Dairy products, such as yogurt, and eggs are suitable. Fruits, such as cherries and plums, are also very beneficial. People with blood type AB should consume rye instead of wheat. They should also avoid beef, corn and tropical fruits.

O-Positive

Type O, the rarer of the blood types, is found in people with strong stomach acids. This allows them to digest meat more efficiently. Their diet should consist of beef, lamb, veal and mutton. Nuts, such as walnuts, and pumpkin seeds are great as well. Green vegetables are good for type O, too, but should be eaten in moderation. Fruits, however, are recommended for aiding the digestive tract. Those with type O blood are encouraged to avoid eggs and dairy, breads and pastas made from wheat, as well as cabbage.
