Signs of an Addiction to Marijuana

Marijuana may produce a psychological addiction in some people that can lead to problems. Some marijuana smokers do not believe they are addicted to the drug but feel the need for it regularly. People around them may or may not notice the symptoms. It is important for the user and his friends and family to recognize the signs to understand what the addict is going through and how to help in the recovery process, if necessary.

Needs

The person who is addicted to marijuana will find that the drug is needed on a regular basis, either every day or several times throughout the day, according to the Mayo Clinic. There may be repeated failure in attempts to stop using marijuana. Using the drug to deal with problems shows a dependence on the substance. People who have a strong need for marijuana often spend money to keep up the supply, even when it may be more than is affordable. They may also focus more and more of their attention on getting and using marijuana instead of spending their energy on more important things.

Physical Symptoms

A person addicted to marijuana may show such changes as poor memory, decreased coordination, difficulty concentrating, slow reaction time and paranoid thinking. Physical symptoms may also include reddened eyes, dilated pupils, anxiety, sluggish feelings, mood swings, sadness, depression and withdrawing from friends and family, according to the Canyon, a rehab and substance abuse treatment center in Malibu, California.

Lifestyle Changes

Some people may see sudden changes in someone who uses marijuana often. Friends and family who suspect someone close to them is addicted to marijuana may notice such things as marijuana accessories. These may include cigarette rolling papers, pipes or other smoking devices. There may be marijuana seeds around the home. The person may use slang terms or language to describe marijuana, such as weed or ganja. The person may start associating with different people who are also suspected of using the drug.

Emotional Behavior

Negative effects will be seen in a person who does not have marijuana or tries giving it up. A review reported in the November 2004 issue of the "American Journal of Psychiatry" found that marijuana users go through substantial withdrawal symptoms when quitting. These symptoms are important to know for the marijuana user trying to quit and the person who wants her to quit. Withdrawal symptoms from marijuana may include irritability, anger, aggression, restlessness, fatigue from lack of sleep, and depression. Some people experience nausea, appetite change, weight loss, and shakiness or sweating when quitting the drug.
