How to Put In Ear Drops

Ear drops cure a variety of inner and outer ear ailments. General wax removal and infection treatment are the two main reasons for using ear drops. Your doctor may have prescribed ear drops for you, or you may be using an over-the-counter product to help remove wax buildup. Follow the dosing instructions on the bottle or prescription closely to make sure you're using the correct amount.

Step 1

Wash your hands. This will keep bacteria from entering the ear canal as you apply your drops.

Step 2

Shake the bottle of ear drops gently. This will ensure that the ingredients are properly mixed.

Step 3

Loosen the cap on the bottle. Most ear drops come with the dropper attached to the cap. If that is not the case with your drops, remove the cap and place the dropper in the bottle.

Step 4

Lie on a sofa or bed, with the affected ear facing upward. You can lie on your back or side.

Step 5

Pick up the dropper and squeeze the tip. Insert the dropper back into the bottle and slowly release your grip on the tip. This will suction the contents of the bottle into the dropper.

Step 6

Pull your outer ear out and slightly upward to open the ear canal.

Step 7

Squeeze the dropper tip gently to release the medication while holding the dropper 1/2 to 1 inch above your ear opening. Apply the prescribed amount of drops into the ear.

Step 8

Lay the dropper on a clean piece of tissue and with another piece, blot up any drips from the surrounding skin.

Step 9

Allow the drops to stay in your ear for up to five minutes. Once you are finished, turn your head with the affected ear downward and allow the remaining liquid to trickle onto a towel or tissue.

Step 10

Replace the cap on the ear drop bottle and store in a cool dark area until your next use.
