How to Avoid Razor Burn When Shaving Genitals

Razor burn is a painful consequence of shaving with razors. This occurs when the razor irritates the skin, which can lead to bacterial infections. Shaving can also encourage ingrown hairs that lead to razor bumps, a painful and unsightly skin blemish. While razor burn can occur anywhere, it is painful when it's around the genitals. With the proper precautions, you can avoid razor burns and make shaving more comfortable.

Step 1

Wash the skin and hair that you want to shave. This softens the hairs and cleans bacteria off the skin, reducing the likelihood of a bacterial infection. The best cleanser to use is an antibacterial soap.

Step 2

Use a new, sanitized razor. Old, worn razors can have imperfections which can catch skin and cause irritation. If the razor is dirty, it can also put germs and bacteria underneath the skin. Dip the razor in an alcohol solution at least once a day and change the blades frequently.

Step 3

Apply a shaving cream or shaving gel to lubricate the skin. This reduces friction on the skin and protects your skin from becoming irritated.

Step 4

Shave in the same direction as the hair growth. This helps to prevent ingrown hairs.

Step 5

Use an baby powder or hydrocortisone cream to reduce irritation and kill and lingering bacteria.

Things You'll Need
