Strong hair is shiny, manageable and beautiful. Hair strength is dependent on the overall health of the hair. When hair is healthy, it is strong, and when it's not healthy, it's extremely weak. The stronger hair is, the more likely it is to stand up to hair dye, heat styling and environmental pollutants. These damaging factors wreak havoc on weak hair, causing split ends, breakage and dryness. Maintaining healthy hair helps keep hair strong and beautiful.
Step 1
Eat right. Hair is mostly protein, so it makes sense that a diet low in protein will cause stunted hair growth or unhealthy hair. Eat a diet high in protein to maximize the health and beauty of hair. High-protein foods include meat, beans, yogurt, soy, fish and eggs.
Step 2
Take vitamins. There are several vitamins that can enhance hair growth, although their use for hair growth is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. These supplements include vitamin B-complex, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, silica, nettle and flaxseed oil. Make sure to see the doctor before taking any supplements, as they may interfere with other drugs and magnify health conditions.
Step 3
Avoid damaging chemicals. Some shampoos and conditioners contain chemicals that damage hair, making it weak and causing damage. The two main harmful chemical types are sulfates and silicons. Both chemicals cause breakage and split ends, so purchase shampoos that don't contain either chemical.
Step 4
Use fingers to loosen tangles before attempting to use a brush. This reduces breakage from tugging on knotted hair. Brushing hair too frequently can also cause damage and breakage, so brush sparingly. Use hair ties and bands that reduce breakage.
Step 5
Apply a hair sunscreen product to keep hair from drying out in the sun and becoming brittle. Wear a hat if you'll be out in the sun for several hours.
Step 6
Avoid heat. Blow dryers, hair straighteners, curling irons and hot rollers all weaken and damage hair, even when using a protective product. Use them only when necessary to keep hair strong and healthy and use protective heat styling products to protect hair from heat styling.
Step 7
See a stylist. Getting hair trimmed removes split ends that could otherwise split further up the hair strand. A professional hair stylist can remove all the dead or damaged hair to keep hair strong and healthy.
