The new year is fast approaching and resolutions are being proclaimed at a fever pitch. Getting in shape, becoming debt free, saving money, finding a new job, and drinking less are some of the most common. All pose a challenge, but resolutions to drink less alcohol can be particularly tough to stick with. However, with the help of a few steps to point you in the right direction, it might be easier than you think.
Step 1
Create a list of reasons why you should drink less and look at them on a daily basis. Excessive alcohol intake can cause major problems with your physical and mental health, and it can also endanger people who are close to you. Pinpoint what your drinking is doing to you personally right now and jot down some key motivators that can keep you from drinking excessively as the new year begins. Improved energy, controlled temper, weight loss, improved brain function and healthier relationships are all examples.
Step 2
Steer clear of bad influences that can cause you to drink. Surround yourself with friends and family members who are nondrinkers and who can be supportive when you tell them you want to cut down on drinking. Avoid the presence of those who drink regularly and will try to pressure you into drinking with them.
Step 3
Reduce your stress levels by engaging in mind and body techniques. Stress can lead you to drink, so you should make lowering your stress levels a secondary goal. Partake in yoga, tai-chi, meditative breathing, muscle relaxation, or guided imagery or simply go for daily walks to keep your stress under control.
Step 4
Occupy the time that you normally drink with other activities that do not involve alcohol. Go to the movies, visit a relative, attend a sporting event or go to a concert.
Step 5
Make it a goal to avoid drinking on certain days of the week where you drank more than other days. Refer to the motivators you wrote down to keep you from binging.
Step 6
Pace yourself when you consume alcohol. Drinking quickly can cause you to overdo your intake. Alcohol gets digested quickly, and this can lead you to drink even more due to compromised inhibitions. Sip your beverages slowly and keep it to one to two beverages.
