The Side Effects of ProAir Albuterol Nasal Spray

ProAir HFA is the brand name of an inhaled medication called albuterol sulfate. It may be prescribed for people who suffer from bronchospasms caused by asthma or other obstructive diseases of the respiratory system. It also may be prescribed for those who suffer bronchospasms after exercising. ProAir HFA may be given to patients ages 4 and older.

Common Side Effects

ProAir HFA, an adrenergic bronchodilator, can produce some initial mild side effects. These include insomnia, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), restlessness, lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, mouth or throat dryness, vomiting, throat or mouth irritation, pain or discomfort in the chest, cramps in the muscles or muscle twitching, drowsiness, an irregular heartbeat or bodily weakness.These temporary side effects may be alarming, but don't generally require medical attention unless they persist or worsen.

Rare Side Effects

According to RxList.com, rare serious side effects can affect your cardiovascular system when using ProAir HFA. This primarily has occurred in patients with pre-existing heart conditions such as high blood pressure, or hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias. RxList.com says people have died from heart attacks following a severe asthmatic event in which they used excessive amounts of the medication.

Serious Side Effects

Taking ProAir HFA can produce some serious side effects. According to the Mayo Clinic, these include chest tightness, severe dizziness, wheezing when breathing, a sensation of choking in the throat, breathing difficulties, throat irritation, facial swelling, throat swelling, lip swelling, bodily flushing or hot flashes, eyelid swelling, skin redness, a rash on the skin or shortness of breath increases. Seek emergency medical treatment for these side effects.
