Types of Human Hair Weaves

Human hair is the most popular type used in hair extensions. Human hair extensions vary in style and quality. The differences in human hair extensions primarily lie in the texture and care of the extensions as well as the application method. Human hair extensions are considered better quality than synthetic hair weaves, because synthetic hair does not move naturally with your own hair and has a different sheen. Because of these traits, human hair weaves are recommended for the most natural look and are available in a wide range of prices.

European

True European human hair extensions may come from Russia, Spain or Italy and is typically thick and soft. European-style human hair may come from outside Europe but has a similar texture to true European hair. Once the hair is harvested, it's treated and dyed. True European human hair is considered higher quality and costs more than most other human hair weave types. European-style hair that is from India or Asia may be of lower quality due to the increased processing required to imitate European hair texture, but it may cost less as well.

Asian

Asian hair weaves start out black and completely straight. According to Hairboutique.com, Asian hair weaves are best for people who are of Asian descent and who don't color their hair. Colored or permed Asian hair extensions are available with a smaller price tag than European hair weaves, but they do not last as long because of the chemicals used on the hair prior to being colored or permed.

Remi

Remi hair is typically from India but may also come from Brazil or from Native Americans. This type of hair is harvested in a way that makes all the cuticles of the harvested hair face in the same direction. This harvesting style makes the extensions smoother and less likely to tangle or become matted. Not all Indian hair is Remi hair, however. Remi hair is higher priced due to its higher quality.

Individual Strand

The method of applying individual strands for human hair weaves involves attaching small strands near the root of the wearer's own hair. The strands are then secured with polymer bonding, and the result is a more natural look and feel. Great Lengths, Hair Dreams and So.Cap are among the companies selling the individual strand hair weave systems. Individual strand extensions may cost up to $3,000, as of 2009.

Weft

Wefts are sections of hair that are woven together at the top and flow at the bottom. According to Hairboutique.com, hair wefts look like little hair curtains. The wefts are woven or plaited into the wearer's existing hair near the root. Wefts may be created by machine or by hand, with the latter variation being higher quality and price.
