Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic and crippling disease affecting the joints of your hands, ankles, wrists and feet. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include joint pain, joint redness, morning stiffness, weight loss, fatigue and rheumatoid nodules (a collection of tissue in your arm). Typically, your doctor will treat rheumatoid arthritis with such medications as ibuprofen, methylprednisone, leflunomide or azathiprine. He may also perform surgical procedures to replace or repair your affected joints. However, there are various natural treatments available to manage rheumatoid arthritis.
Herbs and Oil
According to the Mayo Clinic, thunder god vine and plant or fish oils can treat your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Thunder god vine is a traditional Chinese medication used to reduce inflammation. Its side effects include diarrhea, alopecia (hair loss) and menstrual irregularities.
Plants such as borage, primrose and black currant can be made into an oil which helps decrease morning stiffness. Side effects include flatulence (gas), nausea and diarrhea. Fish oil supplements can also reduce morning stiffness and joint pain. Fish oil's side effects include belching, nausea and diarrhea.
Diet and Exercise
The University of Maryland Medical center says that diet and exercise can play a vital role in reducing your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Eat plenty of fish such as salmon, herring or mackerel, which contain omega-3 fatty acids that help in reducing the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. You should also exercise daily for at least 30 minutes. Even minimal physical activity of three hours over a period of six weeks can help. Exercise increases your joint strength and flexibility.
Other Treatments
Another treatment option involves applying hot or cold compresses to the affected areas. The Mayo Clinic says that a 15-minute hot shower can significantly improve your symptoms. Cold compresses may numb your pain and decrease muscle stiffness. Simply relaxing and reducing the stress in your life can also help reduce your rheumatoid arthritis pain.
