Tylenol Multisymptom Allergy Ingredients

Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom is a combination medication containing a pain reliever, decongestant and antihistamine that may temporarily relieve allergy symptoms, including itching of the nose, throat and eyes, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, nasal and sinus pressure and congestion, and headache. It is recommended to be taken as two caplets every four to six hours, up to 12 caplets per day.

Acetaminophen

Each caplet of Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom contains 325 mg of acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is a commonly used medication for the relief of mild to moderate pain and for the reduction of fever. It works by acting on the brain to reduce pain and body temperature. Side effects of acetaminophen are rare, but large doses or long-term use may cause liver damage, particularly when combined with alcohol or other medications that affect the liver. If a fever has lasted more than three days, a physician should be contacted.

Phenylephrine

Phenylephrine (5 mg) is used in Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom as a nasal decongestant. It works by constricting the blood vessels in the nasal passages to reduce fluid in the nasal tissue that has resulted in swelling. Constriction of the blood vessels reduces the tissue size and opens up nasal passages, allowing for better airflow. Side effects of phenylephrine may include nervousness, tremor and increased heart rate and blood pressure. Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom should be taken with caution by those with cardiac conditions or high blood pressure, possibly under the direction of a physician.

Chlorpheniramine

Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom contains 2 mg of the antihistamine, chlorpheniramine. It works by blocking histamine receptors that are responsible for many symptoms of allergies, such as itching, sneezing and runny nose. Although chlorpheniramine is not as sedating as some other allergy medications, some people may have side effects, such as daytime drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation and urinary retention. People with urinary difficulties, such as enlarged prostate, or those taking other medications that affect the urine may wish to contact a physician before using Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom.

Diphenhydramine

Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom Nighttime contains 25 mg of diphenhydramine instead of chlorpheniramine. Diphenhydramine works in a similar fashion to chlorpheniramine but may have more side effects. It is considered to be a sedating antihistamine, which makes it helpful to encourage sleep. Other side effects may include dry mouth, constipation and urinary retention, along with drowsiness and dizziness. People with urinary disorders, such as enlarged prostate, or those who are taking other medications that affect the urinary system may wish to contact a physician before taking Tylenol Allergy Multi-Symptom Nighttime.
