Abnormal Symptoms While Taking Alesse Birth Control

Alesse is a popular generic birth control pill. Its main ingredients are levonorgestrel (a form of progesterone) and ethinyl estradiol (a form of estrogen). The pill protects against pregnancy, but not against sexually transmitted diseases or HIV. There are many different side effects that you may experience while taking the Alesse. They include headache, breast tenderness, irregular menstruation, dizziness and nausea. However, there are some more severe symptoms that may indicate a serious complication.

Difficulty Breathing and Chest Pain

Myocardial infarction (heart attack) and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lung) are serious complications associated with oral contraceptives. if you experience chest pain that is severe and radiates to the jaw or arm, as well as difficulty breathing, you should head to the nearest emergency room immediately. Make sure you tell them you are taking Alesse. If you are over the age of 35, and are a smoker, you are more at risk for these types of complications.

Leg Pain

Thrombophlebitis (a blood clot in your leg) is another severe symptom while taking Alesse. If you notice an area in your calf that feels like a hard lump which may be reddened and painful, you may be experiencing a blood clot in your leg. Contact your health care provider immediately.

Elevated Blood Pressure

While on oral contraceptives, you may experience an increase in your blood pressure. This may be dangerous. Some signs of high blood pressure include headache, fatigue and vision irregularities. If you experience any of these symptoms, have your blood pressure checked immediately.
