1. Topical Treatment
While there are many treatments for ringworm, or tinea, the most common treatment is with a topical ointment, cream or lotion which contains antifungal drugs such as econazole, spectazole, miconazole or monistat-derm. Topical treatments for tinea are generally applied 2 to 3 times daily, depending on the severity of the fungal infection and your doctor's recommendation. If ringworm occurs on the scalp, the treatment will also include antifungal shampoos or creams which are massaged into the scalp and hair each day. When lesions are present on the scalp, generally an oral antifungal medication is also prescribed.
2. Treating Tinea From the Inside Out
If a tinea infection is widespread, or if it begins to affect the hair and nails, antifungal drugs are necessary to treat tinea from the inside out. While the most common medication is griseofulvin, others such as itraconazole, flucanazole or terbinafine may also be given. As with any prescribed medication, make sure that you follow your doctor's orders to the letter to prevent the return of fungal infection. These oral medications may come with side effects, such as stomach upset or skin rash, so speak to your doctor if you notice these changes. Additionally, antacids or treatment for heartburn and GERD should not be taken with your tinea medications, as they reduce absorption.
3. Hello Bacteria, Goodbye Fungus
Cure tinea the natural way, with a healthy bacteria. Certain medications, such as antibiotics and birth control as well as a weakened immune system increases our susceptibility to various forms of infection, including fungal infections, as the "friendly" bacteria in our bodies is destroyed. Supplementing your diet with good bacteria, as found in yogurt cultures or probiotic capsules, helps to restore healthy bacteria in the body so that you can more easily fight against infection. Add yogurt which contains L. acidophilus to your daily diet and take probiotic capsule, following the manufacturer's instructions for dosage amounts.
4. Tea Tree for Tinea
Another natural remedy for tinea is tea tree oil, which can be applied topically to help kill fungus and bacteria. Tea tree oil should be applied to clean, dry skin in a diluted form. Add five drops of the oil to clean water and soak a clean towel or cloth in the water. Apply to the affected area two or three times daily. Additionally, you can add five to ten drops of tea tree oil to liquid body soaps and shampoos to help treat and prevent fungal infections.
