How to Repair Damaged Hair Ends

If you style your hair with heat, perm or dye your hair frequently, or haven't gotten your hair cut in a while, the ends of your hair may be damaged. Damaged hair ends may appear frayed, have split ends, feel dry or brittle to the touch, and tangle easily. Damaged hair ends may break off when brushed, and must be treated with care. To repair your damaged hair ends, use moisturizing treatments, protein conditioners, trim your hair regularly and avoid doing further damage to your hair.

Step 1

Use hair shears to trim your hair every five weeks, recommends "Cosmopolitan" magazine. This way, you can trim away split ends without sacrificing the length of your hair. Cut about 1/4 inch each time you trim. You can purchase hair shears at a drugstore or beauty supply store.

Step 2

Apply a weekly conditioning treatment that contains protein. Focus on the ends of your hair. Protein conditioners rebuild hair follicles to make them stronger and less prone to breakage. The rest of the week, use a moisturizing conditioner after shampooing your hair.

Step 3

Use a moisturizing hair mask once every two weeks, focusing particularly on the ends. Combine a mashed avocado, an egg, a banana and 2 tbsp. of olive oil in a bowl, then apply liberally to hair, suggests "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Leave the treatment in for 10 minutes, then rinse hair thoroughly.

Step 4

Apply a hot oil treatment once every two weeks. You can purchase a hot oil treatment at a drugstore or beauty supply store, or make your own by heating 1/2 cup of olive oil in a saucepan until it is warm. Apply the warm olive oil to your hair liberally, then cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Step 5

Avoid causing hair unnecessary damage. Limit heat styling, perming and coloring as much as possible, and wear a swimming cap when swimming in a chlorinated pool. Wear a hat when you're out in the sun, to prevent sun damage.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not peel or pull at split ends with your fingers. Instead, trim them carefully with a sharp pair of scissors.
  • Use extreme caution heating olive oil over the stove, and test it to make sure it is not too hot before applying it to hair.
