How to Stop Hair Loss Fast

If you notice hair loss, you should speak to your doctor to rule out any medical causes for the condition. Certain drugs, as well as diseases, such as a thyroid disorder, can lead to hair loss. Changing your medication or treating the underlying disease can stop you from losing more hair. If it is not a medical reason, you can take several steps to stop hair loss fast using over-the-counter treatments and some lifestyle changes.

Step 1

Apply a minoxidil based treatment to the scalp. Minoxidil topical treatments are available over the counter and can help stop further hair loss and stimulate new growth. Rogaine has a product line of minoxidil-based treatments. There is an extra-strength version with 5 percent minoxidil, while most have 2 percent minoxidil.

Step 2

Use the minoxidil topical treatment twice a day. Apply the solution to your scalp when it is clean and dry. Do not use the topical treatment more than twice a day. This will not give you faster results.

Step 3

Improve your diet. Dietary deficiencies can cause hair loss and correcting the deficiencies can stop the hair loss. Include foods high in iron, protein, B vitamins and zinc. Eat a well-rounded diet that has healthy food choices like fish, nuts, poultry, broccoli, spinach, kale, lettuce, citrus fruits and milk.

Step 4

Stop behaviors that could be causing the hair loss. Mistreatment of the hair can cause thinning and permanent hair loss. Avoid tight hairstyles, like ponytails and cornrows, that break and damage the hair. Chemical processing, like hair dyes and perms can make you lose hair as well. Limit the amount of heat that you use when styling by not using hairdryers, flat irons and curling irons.

Tips and Warnings

  • There are medical treatments that are performed by a physician to stop hair loss quickly. This includes cortisone injections into the scalp or a prescription for a hair growth stimulating drug like Propecia.
