Massages are used as a form of relaxation and therapy. They can be conducted by a professional or at home by a loved one. Depending on the purpose of the massage, massage oil may be beneficial. The use of oil allows the hands to glide over the body and skin in a smooth manner. The oil itself may also have relaxing or healing properties if it contains aromatherapy scents. Using massage oil is easy. Achieving the perfect massage technique is the difficult part of massage.
Step 1
Read the instructions on the massage oil label. Some aromatherapy oils require diluting. Most types require equal parts water to oil. Mix the diluted oil if needed and put it in a sealed container.
Step 2
Pour hot water into a bowl or glass for use in warming the oil. A small amount is all that is needed to heat the oil. Place the sealed oil container into the water container and cover it with hot water. Wait three to five minutes before removing the oil and testing it for warmth. Place a small amount of oil on the inside of your wrist to ensure it is not too hot.
Step 3
Drizzle the oil over the body part to be massaged or pour a small amount into your hands. Either method is just as effective, but the person receiving the massage may enjoy the oil being poured directly onto her skin.
Step 4
Begin massaging the oil into the skin. A massage can be done in many ways. For a basic massage, you can apply mild to moderate pressure while kneading the skin like bread dough or you can simply rub the skin in small or long strokes.
Step 5
Ask the person receiving the massage for feedback. They can advise you as to whether they would prefer soft or hard kneading and whether they prefer fast or slow strokes. As long as you are not inflicting pain, the massage will be a success.
Tips and Warnings
- Pick up a simple book on massage or review massage techniques on the Internet.
- Do not apply essential oils or aromatherapy oils directly to the skin without confirming the oil does not require dilution. Some oils in their purest forms can cause skin irritation. Be sure not to microwave or boil the oil as it can heat quickly and cause serious burns to the skin.
