How to Cure Foot Odor

If taking off your shoes has become an unpleasant experience for you and those around you, you may have realized what a problem foot odor can be. Stemming from various different causes from dietary pitfalls to hygiene issues, this is a problem that can cause awkward social situations and needs to be addressed promptly. With a few changes to your lifestyle, foot odor can be eliminated so you can breathe easily next time you need to take off your shoes.

Step 1

Wash your feet every day, twice a day if the odor is persistent. Use an antibacterial soap to help get rid of the bacteria that causes the odors. Use a clean cloth to get between your toes with soap and be sure to rinse your feet off well. Pat them dry before putting socks on.

Step 2

Soak your feet daily in warm water with apple cider vinegar. Add 1 cup of vinegar per gallon of warm water and allow your feet to soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Five boiled teabags in a gallon of water can help in place of the vinegar. The vinegar will help to make your feet more acidic and better able to fight off the smelly bacteria, whereas the teabags can help to prevent your feet from sweating as much. Dry your feet off well before putting on socks.

Step 3

Wear clean cotton socks each day. Cotton is more absorbent, so it may help to cut back on some of the odors from moisture. If your feet sweat a lot during the day, take an extra pair of socks with you and change them when you notice the pair you're wearing becoming damp. Alternate shoes so you aren't wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row, this allows your shoes time to dry out. Sprinkle baking soda in your shoes after you take them off to help absorb odors that have transferred into your shoes. Discard the old baking soda before putting them on again.

Step 4

Sprinkle baking soda or baby powder into your socks before you put them on to help absorb moisture throughout the day. You can also apply an antiperspirant to your feet after you shower to help with the sweating.

Step 5

Take advantage of every opportunity to take your shoes and socks off and walk around barefoot. This gives your feet a break from being confined and allows them to get some fresh air.

Tips and Warnings

  • Stay hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of water daily to keep your system flushed. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these will only dehydrate your body and make the odors worse. Talk to your doctor or podiatrist if the smell won't go away to help find the cause and a possible solution for the problem.
