How to Get Rid of Razor Bumps on Women

Razor bumps occur after shaving and appear as the hair grows back into the skin. A woman often gets razor bumps under her arms, in her bikini line and on her legs. Razor bumps can cause a red rash and make your skill feel chafed. They can especially be an annoyance if you plan to wear sleeveless clothing or plan to hit the beach in a swimsuit. If you are a woman who experiences razor bumps, you don't have to avoid shaving to get rid of them.

Step 1

Apply hydrocortisone cream to the affected area. As soon as you notice the rash, apply a thin layer over the razor bumps. The hydrocortisone cream is available over the counter at most pharmacies and gets rid of the redness and irritation associated with razor bumps.

Use the cream for only a couple of days. Two to three applications should be sufficient to get rid of the redness and irritation. Do not overuse the product since prolonged exposure can thin the skin.

Step 2

Treat the razor bumps with a topical acne treatment. The same ingredients used to get rid of acne can be used for razor bumps. Choose a treatment that contains Benzoyl peroxide. Apply the topical treatment daily until the razor bumps go away.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin with a lotion after you shave. This relieves the dryness and itchiness the razor bumps cause. It can also prevent future outbreaks.

Step 4

Shave while showering. Keeping the skin well hydrated during shaving can help relieve the irritation caused by the rash. Avoid using soap since this can dry out the skin during shaving. Instead, use a shaving cream that contains a healing agent for razor bumps, like aloe.

Tips and Warnings

  • Not shaving can stop razor bumps, but for many women that might not be a realistic option unless you wish to wax or apply a depilatory to remove hair from your body.
