The Best Methods to Gain a Tan

Tanning is a way to change the color of the skin either by a coloring agent, chemical or by the melanin that is in the skin. Achieving a natural tan is generally something that takes time and effort to achieve. Spray-on tans have become increasingly popular due to their ability to quickly change appearance. Most ways to achieve a tan are through personal preferences. Some people enjoy the look of a natural real tan from sunlight, while others prefer the safer way of achieving a tan through chemical processing and makeup.

Tanning Bed

A tanning bed is a natural alternative to tanning in the outdoor sun. The only difference is most tanning beds use UVB rays to penetrate the skin. This allows for a concentrated version of ultra violet therapy to reach the skin and change its color and appearance. With a tanning bed, it is easy to gain a gradual, natural-looking tan. Both sides of the body receive rays at the same time---allowing for less time being spent gaining UV exposure as opposed to natural sunlight. Tanning beds also offer convenience of a bed that has fans and offers privacy to tan in a bikini or in the nude.

Spray-on Tan

Spray-on tans are becoming a popular alternative to sunless tanners and tanning beds. They are generally applied with an aerosol air gun that sprays a light but even coating on the skin. Chemicals sprayed on do contain DHA which temporarily changes the color of the skin from white to a light brown color. Most take up to an hour to see results, while others contain an instant bronzing ingredient that allows tan enthusiasts to obtain their beach-ready body before they walk out of the salon.

Sunless Tanner

Sunless tanners are similar to spray tans that you can obtain at a salon except they can be purchased over the counter at drug stores or mass merchant stores such as Walmart. They are designed to be used in the comfort of your own home. They generally do not contain a bronzer and can be difficult to apply in hard-to-reach places because most are in crème form. Streaking and yellow staining is common with most over-the-counter sunless tanners.

Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight has always been the most popular way to gain a tan. Many people head to the beach to spend the day near the water and absorb the sun's rays. As the earth's ozone layer is being destroyed through global warming---the sun is getting warmer, leading to damaging effects on the skin causing wrinkling and melanoma---one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer.

Tanning Enhancement Pills

Tanning enhancement pills work internally to stimulate the melanin formation within the epidermis. The ingredient L-tyrosine is a natural-occurring amino acid. It works at giving the body the nutrients it needs to increase the growth of melanin production. Pills are generally taken once a day and should be used in conjunction with a minimal tanning exposure to gain a bronze tan in the least amount of time.
